Helloooo, been playing with RPG Solo for a while now, on and off, had a bit of a sci-fi military itch to scratch and wanted to try and improve my military writing and thought I'd share this, it's more for personal stuff so might have a lot of errors I didn't bother proofreading but thought someone might find it interesting to follow along. I'm by no means a military expert, so if there's anyone with actual experience in service pointers would be appreciated or any other insights from none-service members of the forum enjoy  Big Grin

It's not much so far, but I'll add to it as I get around to writing more of Harwood's adventures on the frontlines, I also have some lore being slowly developed, so I'll periodically be sharing that too.

Name: Harwood White

Rank

3 = 3[d3]

Corporal

1st Karvia Regiment, Loksaravian Empire

vs

2nd Hwan Regiment, Kingdom of Ateruntia and 1st Alvia Regiment, Principality of Fanhano

Territorial dispute has caused Loksavarian Empire to mobilise against the Kingdom of Ateruntia who have called in the support of the Principality of Fanhano.

Ateruntia wishes to annex Waginland Territory lost in the Loksavarian Annexation of Ateruntia, religious differences cause issues within the regions.

How experienced are the 1st Alvia Regiment?

Inexperienced -1

And the 2nd Hwan Regiment?

Experienced 1

Who had the initial assault? Karvia vs Hwan

1 = 1[d2]

Karvia assaulted first

July 12th, 3019; 1st Karvia Regiment Assaulted the border town of Lauri, Porara County.

Were they met with resistance?

(Somewhat Likely | 10[d10]) Yes, and...

It was heavy, did they have armour support?

(Somewhat Unlikely | 8[d10]) Yes

Does Karvia Regiment have air support?

(Somewhat Likely | 6[d10]) Yes

The assault on Lauri was initiated from the town of Nuvuskyla in the early hours of the morning, the naturally hilly terrain and thick fog from the cold helped to conceal the two low-flying V-LAT Platoon Dropships, each carried an under-strength Platoon of three sections and an Infantry Fighting Hover Vehicle for support.

HEAVYHAWK 1-1: "HEAVYHAWK 1, BRAVO ACTUAL, over."

BRAVO 2-1: "Go ahead HEAVYHAWK 1, over."

Corporal Harwood heard the crackled comms through his helmet as he checked the magazine of his hydrogen-kinetic assault rifle for the umpteenth time. It was not that he was edgy or nervous, he was more ready, and geared to go and sitting in a glorified flying tin can was not his idea of a good time, even if HEAVYHAWK's pilots had made it a pleasant ride so far.

HEAVYHAWK 1-1: "BRAVO ACTUAL, 10km from LZ, recon suggests rapid touchdown and disembark, break..."

Harwood rolled a gloved thumb across one of the Blueshade hydro-kinetic rounds in his magazine, the V-LAT shuddered gently as the pilot angled them dangerously close to the high-altitude hills, he could see the pair of lifters gracefully skirting at break-neck speeds in his minds eye, seconds away from disaster every time they committed to an adjustment.

HEAVYHAWK 1-1: "HEAVYHAWK 2 going in for Easyride, full touchdown on LZ BLEAK. Looks like you got the shit job Anderson. Over."

BRAVO 2-1: "Wilco HEAVYHAWK 1, rapid touchdown, always the case. Into the fires of hell boys. Over."

The V-LAT was filled with amused laughter from the platoon onboard, the cacophony being dulled by Harwood's comm-system. Rapid insertion was not something new to him, not by a long shot, but from the briefing reports he had seen and heard, very little information had been gathered by the recon teams or SAT-Fotos, some kind of ECM scrambling data and with Lauri being situated at the highest point of the mountains, it would be a cramped landing with very little cover. Though Harwood was expecting the worst, the Ateruntians had no idea the Loksaravian Royal Army was about to land the first blow of the conflict.

EDIT:

V-LAT = Variable-Lift Armoured Transport, think heavy dropship
Hydrogen-Kinetic Assault Rifle = HKAR and variations from now on

IFHV= Infantry Fighting Hover Vehicle "Shark"
Major Anderson was not like other officers, he was full of humour and always had the backs of his men, Harwood could appreciate that as could most of 1st Company. Most Loksaravian officers were uptight and by the book, but not Anderson though, he used the book as a weapon to beat the enemy around the head, and when that failed, excessive air support. Solved all problems; if you asked the flyboys anyway.

The two V-LATs approached Lauri and veered off towards their designated landing points, so close to the fortified town it would be unlikely any defenders were not aware something was up. The red glow of the Ready Light set all the men into motion, the crewmen prepping the rear doors as everyone checked themselves and each other over for the last time.

Do the Lauri defenders have time to muster a defence?

(50/50 | 4[d10]) No

HEAVYHAWK 1 spun rearward, gimbal engines roaring as they compensated for the sudden inertia difference, the men onboard jolted but held fast, hands wrapped around the yellow support handles above. The Ready Light dropped from red to amber, the rear doors whirred, then parted to expose the VLAT interior to the early morning sunlight glancing off of the white and grey snowy mountainside, momentarily blinding despite Harwood's visor dimming automatically. A loud, single klaxon called and the amber turned to green.

"GO GO GO!"

Anderson filled his ears and the men surged forward, four by four they dropped from the dropship taking up security positions around the drop site in their respective squads. Harwood barked orders and threw hand gestures like some kind of composer, his men following to the letter. As the third squad out, he had taken the front and with a cursory glance up through the whirling flurry of snow towards where the outer wall of Lauri stood, he saw no hostiles.

Does HEAVYHAWK 2 land without issues?

(50/50 | 2[d10]) No

Hostile contact when disembarking or does HEAVYHAWK take damage before landing?

A

As planned, HEAVYHAWK 2 cruised towards a full landing in a rocky clearing just outside of Lauri, rotating so that the men disembarking would be protected from the town's view and any hostile fire. The rear doors dropped and the same klaxon sounded, 2nd Platoon disembarked but halfway through, the sound of gunfire rattled from the fortified town, chem-rounds scattered across the front of the VLAT and 2nd Platoon returned fire from what cover they could find.

Harwood glanced left and right upon hearing the gunfire, HKAR in a ready position as he scouted the upper walls of the town, he had located four entry points on this side alone, though no openings for hostiles to fire down unless they manned the walls themselves. Behind, the VLAT rolled its engines forward and pushed away from the rocky mountainside, dropping altitude to skim low and away. This was it, they were on their own.

The low grumbling of the lift engines of the IFHV carrying it upwards towards Lauri steeled Harwood's nerves and with a forward motion, he ordered the squad onwards, two squads left, one squad right of the IFHV. Slow, uphill progress on uneven rocky terrain.

At some point, contact must have been made between 2nd Platoon and Anderson, who had taken up a position with Company HQ just behind, lower near the initial drop site.
________________________________________________
Anderson (BRAVO 2-1): "BRAVO 2-1, BRAVO 2-3, one squad to support BRAVO 2-2, break..."
________________________________________________
The sound of gunfire off towards Harwood's right, somewhere on the eastern side of the town grew more intense and a few shots were unloaded from the squad on the far side of the IFHV towards the town's wall ahead. Blue hazy vapour trails of the hydro-kinetic rounds hung in the air for a moment, the reason they had been given their moniker; Blueshade Rounds.

How bad has 2nd Platoon been hit? Very bad, potentially lost IFHV or Dropship or Minor, pinned down by MG fire.

B

(Not as dramatic as I was hoping, maybe they're just militia.)
________________________________________________
Anderson (BRAVO 2-1): "BRAVO 2-2 pinned by enemy MG fire, Harwood break off and provide fire support, low ordnance only, no intel on civvies inside. Over."

Harwood (DELTA 3-4): "Wilco BRAVO 2-1, break off and provide fire support. Over."
________________________________________________
He repeated for the sake of his men, relaying orders. They broke off in tandem and double-timed towards the ridge exposing 2nd Platoon's landing site, once at the top he dropped to one knee, back against a rock and steadied his HKAR against the dirt taking in the situation as his squad piled around him, evenly spaced.

Has 2nd Platoon taken any casualties?

(Somewhat Likely | 7[d10]) Yes

'Shit'. Harwood thought as he locked his under-barrel grenade launcher into firing position and launched it towards a section of the wall, the enemy had some sort of heavy calibre machinegun set up, big enough to punch through the VLATs canopy and damage one of its engines, smoke and fire spilt from the vents.

The grenade impacted, shattering a portion of the stone wall just below where he had aimed, the force knocking the gunner from his position. Sliding a second into the launcher, he ordered his light-machine gunner to suppress the wall and ordered a fireteam to follow, including their medic. 2nd Platoon looked like they had suffered a mass casualty, men were strewn about, limbs missing from the heavy gun they had been on the wrong end of, and he could see two squad-level medics trying to drag whoever they could find back behind the IFHV which had begun pounding HE rounds into the top section of the wall having obviously been authorised to engage, deadly concussive forces and razor-sharp stone shrapnel shredded the defenders in seconds.

Recon and intel had been spotty, but he wondered how they had missed heavy armaments in the town, it was supposed to be lightly defended with the Ateruntian's having no idea an attack was coming. Just as Harwood and 3 of his men reached a grouping of rocks to return fire and help where they could, the steady thunk, thunk, thunk of a cyclic autocannon reverberated through the air and splashed across the hull of 2nd Platoon's IFHV, which rapidly drifted to the side in response, avoiding another three rounds which pounded craters into the snow behind where it had been moments before.

Now they had armour? Harwood could not believe his luck, this was going to be a rough day.

The second part I did today, enjoying kind of just making stuff up as I go, hopefully, it isn't too annoying to follow.  Blush also if anyone knows how to do spoilers, it would be very much appreciated (so I can condense the blocks of gameplay)
Not annoying. I love military sci-fi myself, so well done. Would also like to do spoilers but I don't think it's possible yet. But Mark is pretty good about updating the site and available tools as he can. You might want to ask him about that.
